Cycling Without Age Tri-Shaw Initiative Launched in Dublin City
Lord Mayor Alison Gilliland launches programme for those with mobility impairment as part of Inclusion and Integration Week
Dublin, 11 November 2021 Dublin City’s participation in the Cycle Without Age Tri-Shaw initiative was launched today, Thursday 11 November 2021, as part of Dublin City’s Inclusion and Integration Week by Lord Mayor of Dublin Alison Gilliland in the Irish National Warm Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge.
The introduction of the Dublin City Tri-Shaw programme offers those with mobility impairment an opportunity to experience the joy of movement and exhilaration of a cycle in the great outdoors. The Tri-Shaw bikes are battery powered and will be operated by volunteer pilots. Dublin City Council is actively recruiting volunteers at present and will provide training through their Sports & Wellbeing section. Those interested should email sports@dublincity.ie.
Mary Noonan, Community & Social Development Officer, Dublin City Council South Central, said, “Our aim is to encourage volunteers throughout the community to train as Tri-Shaw Pilots, enabling people to avail of the opportunity to engage in their community in an enjoyable and inclusive way, improving their health and wellbeing. We encourage anyone interested to contact DCC directly and we will provide them with training as part of the recruitment process”
Lord Mayor Alison Gilliland, launching the initiative, said, “I am delighted that Dublin City Council and its partners have been able to bring this innovative project forward. It is testament to Dublin City Council’s continuing commitment to inclusion, mobility and accessibility. Cycling uptake has increased significantly in Dublin and this initiative offers the opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to consider cycling as their preferred mode of transportation. This project will help to provide active mobility options to everyone. “
Síle McNulty Goodwin, Healthy Dublin City Coordinator said, “Echoing the foundations of the national Healthy Ireland strategy, through our Community Resilience Funding in 2021 we’re focused on empowering individuals and communities by supporting initiatives around the three themes of Keeping Active, Minding Your Mood and Getting Involved. These five customised Tri-Shaws are funded as part of our extensive community resilience actions to encourage everyone to enjoy physical and mental health and wellbeing. This project is also part of our wider collaboration as a new member in 2021 of the WHO Partnership for Healthy Cities that is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Our key public health focus within the partnership is on promoting and delivering improved public mobility across all ages. It’s a great example of our joined-up working and will make a difference at the local level”
The Cycle Without Age Tri-Shaw initiative is funded by Dublin City Council‘s Healthy Dublin City under the Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) and delivered locally in collaboration with the South Central Area Office and Dublin City Sport & Wellbeing Partnership.
