Traveller Collection publication and website launch

To celebrate the launch of Traveller Collection the publication and www.TravellerCollection.ie (website live from 11 November), artist Séamus Nolan discusses work being carried out to preserve and interpret the material culture of Irish Travellers. Traveller artist Rosaleen McDonagh, Traveller musician Thomas McCarthy and Traveller activist Martin Collins of Pavee Point Traveller & Roma Centre will participate. Following the presentations the publication and website will be launched by Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr. Joe Costello.  The publication and website resulted from the project Traveller Collection at the Hugh Lane Gallery which was a partnership between the Hugh Lane Gallery and Create – the National Development Agency for Collaborative Arts as part of the EU Collaborative Arts Partnership Programme (CAPP) in 2018. Artist Séamus Nolan worked with Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre to explore material and material processes within national and private collections relative to Irish Travellers.

Creating a sensory space to develop your own personal narrative

To create a social link to support disability in a non clinical environment. By providing a sensory space to develop a movement of muscle strength and interaction skills. Dance and visual art is an essential part of highlighting our state of mind . Expressing our thoughts and concerns help to regulate the spectrum community and allow others explore and experience our communication process.
Most in the spectrum community doesn’t recognize facial expressions so movement brings about an understanding of spacious and presence. When dancing you become aware of another person s space .

From religious processions and Dublin traditions, to when women drank in the snug and the ‘good suit’ came in and out of the pawn shop when needed, The 50 Francis Street Archive is a unique collection of stunning, original photographs, a fascinating social history and celebration of people and places  from the Photographer John Walsh’s life’s works. John Walsh ran his photography business out of a small shop on 50 Francis Street in inner city Dublin. For over fifty years, he took thousands of photos on all aspects of Dublin life – street photography, iconic religious events , social life, tenement life,  and a first hand view of life in this era. Here in this exclusive exhibition the images from the 50s and 60s of member of the Travelling Community are brought to life by his granddaughter Suzanne who will give us a unique and nostalgic look of an integral part of Johns Archive…A Travelling Past.

Race and Place in the City

This walking tour of the 500m stretch of Lower Gardiner Street explores themes of race, place, memory and theology. Inspired by the work of Black theologian Willie Jennings, the tour addresses three ideas related to the development of race: displacement, ownership and segregation. How did the singing of a racist hymn in a local church reach the bookshelves of millions? Was a church caretaker living just off the street actually a slave owner? How did the historic landlord-tenant relationship in the area lead to the eviction of 21st century migrant-led churches? The tour shows how ‘whiteness’ sustains itself in the community by always remaining at the centre and highlights the need for integration and inclusion to overcome the challenge of colonisation that still litters our streets.

Lower Gardiner Street, Meet outside The Exchange, near the loopline rail overpass.
